On Sunday I went to the guided tour of the "CityLeaks"-festival; earlier that day it had started to rain and didn`t look like stopping any time soon,... but when I arrived at the meeting point in Cologne Ehrenfeld it had stopped raining and the sun even appeared for a few minutes... and brilliantly there already were many people there: a potpourri of art aficionados of all ages and tastes... which shows how "en vogue" Urban Art has become by now. The guided tour cost 5 Euros per person and took approx. 1.5 hours. A young woman lead us through Ehrenfeld and showed us some of the artworks, which were painted on houses and walls especially for the festival. As we heard, the artists were endorsed by the city and some other sponsors: all of the artworks were made legally and most of them will officially stay were they are even after the festival.

Am Sonntag war ich bei der Führung vom "CityLeaks"-Festival; eigentlich hatte es sich schon so richtig schön eingeregnet, aber als ich dann am Treffpunkt in Ehrenfeld ankam war es trocken und zwischendurch kam sogar die Sonne raus... und tollerweise waren schon richtig viele Leute da: eine bunte Mischung von Kunstinteressierten jeden Alters und jeden Geschmacks... was zeigt wie "angesagt" Urban Art mittlerweile ist. Das Ganze hat 5 Euro pro Person gekostet und ca.1.5 Stunden gedauert. Eine junge Frau ist mit uns durch Ehrenfeld gelaufen, um uns einige der Kunstwerke zu zeigen, die extra für das Festival auf Häuserwände oder Mauern gemalt wurden. Wie uns gesagt wurde, werden die Künstler von der Stadt und einigen anderen Sponsoren unterstützt; alle Kunstwerke wurden legal gemacht und fast alle werden auch nach dem Festival dort bleiben, wo sie jetzt sind.

... born in Frankfurt, he is now one of the most visible and famous Urban Artists in Berlin. Most of the time he doesn't paint directly on the wall but prepares a piece of brown packing papier in the studio, which he then just glues on walls or houses. The subjects 'communication' and 'references to urban life' are very often seen in his artworks, mostly showing melancholic looking young girls like this one. With this special way of line drawing and a certain chart of colour range his work often has a high value of recognition.
... ist in Frankfurt geboren, und mittlerweile einer der präsentesten und bekanntesten Urban Art Künstler Berlins. Meistens malt er nicht direkt auf eine Mauer, sondern bereitet im Studio ein Stück braunes Packpapier vor, das er dann auf die Hauswand oder Mauer klebt. Das Thema Kommunikation und die Bezugnahme zum urbanen Leben sind oft in seinen Kunstwerken zu erkennen, oft in Form von melancholisch dargestellten jungen Mädchen wie diesem hier. Mit dieser speziellen Art der Linienführung and seiner ganz eigenen Farbpalette hat seine Arbeit einen starken Wiedererkennungswert.

... is a young woman living in Cologne and mainly working with paint on wooden material. Her one of a kind paintings always have a certain aura of melancholy and spirituality and very often deal with the question of her own identity.
... ist eine junge Frau die in Köln lebt und arbeitet und oft Holz als Untergrundmaterial benutzt. Ihre einzigartigen Bilder haben meistens eine bestimmte Aura von Melancholie oder Spiritualität und beinhalten nicht selten die Frage nach der eigenen Identität.

... is a self-taught artist, who works in the studio as well as on the street. The young woman often draws her inspiration from her own existential and political/religious questions and uses a metaphorical level to express it. For her street art she often prefers lost spaces: by revitalising it with her paintings she brings attention to them.
... ist eine autodidaktische Künstlerin, die sowohl im Studio als auch auf der Straße arbeitet. Die junge frau zieht häufig ihre Inspiration aus ihren eigenen existeltiellen und politischen/religiösen Fragen und nutz die metaphorische Ebene um dies auszudrücken. Bei ihrer Straßenkunst bevorzugt sie ausgestorbene Räume: sie wertet diese auf und lenkt so wieder Aufmerksamkeit darauf.

... is a young man who is very often inspired by his heritage, which is often reflected in his work when he for example combines illustrative and vectorial elements with iconographic elements and colours which remind you of Latin American roots. You can often sense some kind of human shape underneath its abstract looking elements. As you can see he was just working on his murals when we arrived at the scene, so we had the chance to watch him paint for a little while. ... ist ein junger Mann der sich sehr oft von seiner Herkunft inspirieren lässt, was sich oft in seinen Arbeiten widerspiegelt, wenn er z.B. illustrative und vektorielle Elemente mit ikonographischen Elementen und Farben kombiniert, was einen an seine latein-amerikanischen Wurzeln erinnert. Oft kann man eine Art menschliche Figur in seinen abstrakt aussehenden Elementen erahnen. Wie ihr seht hat er gerade an seinem Wandgemälde gearbeitet als wir dort angekommen waren, wir konnten ihm also eine Weile beim Malen zusehen.

.. are a young man and a young woman from Frankfurt who always work together and love to include the motif of melancholy and profound humour in their artworks. Strange looking people and dogs are very often subjects of their pictures, which tend to look kind of grotesque and cute at the same time.
... sind ein junger Mann und eine junge Frau aus Frankfurt, die immer zusammen arbeiten und oft das Thema Melancholie oder tiefgehenden Humor in ihren Kunstwerken verarbeiten. Fremdartig aussehende Menschen und Hunde sind häufig Motive auf ihren Bildern, die oft grotesk und niedlich zugleich wirken.

... often uses Cuba and the Cuban revolution for his subject or source of inspiration. Also being known for alienating familiar motifs and showing them in new contexts, he sometimes uses stencils for parts of his artworks or he paints on paper, which he then glues on the wall.
... hat oft Kuba oder die Kuba-Revolution als Thema oder Inpirationsquelle. Er ist auch bekannt dafür dass er bekannte Motive entfremdet und in einen neuen Kontext bringt, oft benutzt er Schablonen für Teile seiner Werke oder malt auf Papier, das er dann auf Mauern klebt.

... often uses common animals as his subject: rabbits, birds, horses, fish or moles are some of his main subjects, and in many cases they are shown "to the bone" or hanging upside down. With his morbid black and white line drawing he shows his fascination for their diversified representations, metaphorical strength and the circle of life. In this case he supposedly gave the landlord of this house the choice between a rabbit with fur and one without... as you can see, he surprisingly prefered the naked version.
... nutzt oft Tiere als Motive für seine Kunst: Hasen, Vögel, Pferde, Fische oder Maulwürfe sind einige seiner bevorzugten Tiermotive, und in vielen Fällen zeigt er sie "bis auf die Knochen" oder kopfüber hängend. Mit seiner morbiden, schwarz-weißen Linienführung zeigt er seine Faszination für ihre zahlreichen Repräsentationen, metaphorischen Stärken und den Kreislauf des Lebens. In diesem Fall hier hat er angeblich den Hausbesitzer vor die Wahl zwischen einem Hasen mit Fell und einem ohne gestellt... wie ihr sehen könnt hat er sich überrraschenderweise für die nackte Version entschieden.
