Yüksel Arslan @ Kunsthalle Duesseldorf

You still have exactly 1 week remaining to take a look at the small but very good exhibition at the Kunsthalle Duesseldorf!!!
On display are drawings by the Franco-Turkish artist Yüksel Arslan, which floored me on my first visit and still inspired me on my second.
Many of the beautiful and partialy "shocking" motives are manufactured with an attention to detail which makes you think of scientific drawings. Although this, and the fact that the artist obviously dealt with his motives in a very intense and studious way, creates a feeling of observing the work of an obsessive person, the pictures create an impression of a certain naivete. Among other things this is due to the technique he uses (and developed himself) which reminds you of coloured pencil or crayon drawings.
I don`t want to reveal too much, just check it out for yourself and be surprised!
The exhibition will continue until the 24th of June at the Kunsthalle Duesseldorf, Grabbeplatz4, 40213 Duesseldorf.

and the winner is....

On the occasion of the TOYKIO Pop-Up store in the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf (about whose opening I`ve blogged) the museum's facebook page organized a design competition: the participants were asked to create their own munny on the basis of the downloadable outline... with the free choice of digital or manual design.
I immediately went at it and had quite a lot of fun digitally designing "the warrior in me".
Now the deadline has passed and I am glad to announce that I am actually one of the winners!!! YEAHHHHHH!

YEAHHHHHH!

annual exhibition Art Academy Düsseldorf 2012 (Rundgang der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf 2012)

This sunday was the last day of this year's exhibition of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. I went there on two days to properly absorb the many artworks in the huge and impressive building. The art students exhibited their works in the high-ceilinged and atmospheric rooms over several storeys, and as far as I can judge from two of five visitors' days, the event was highly frequented around the clock. The repertoire ranged from sculpting, photography and architecture to stage design and painting. While I can't say that many artworks blew my mind, the atmosphere and the people alone were exciting and worth seeing. Plus in my point of view, you don't always have to  like everything personally, but you can still appreciate the ideas and form of realisation, which can inspire you in turn. Anyway, I took a lot of pictures, some of which I will show you here:...

TOYKIO Pop-Up Store Eröffnung

Yesterday TOYKIOS Pop-Up store opened in the museum shop of the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf. From 7.30pm to midnight you could watch the artists/designers Flying Förtress, Max Fiedler, Michael Kohlbecher, Florian Flatau und Nick Nite decorate Munnys while a DJ (NOT the announced DJ Rafik, for reasons unknown) added a musical background. There was plenty to shop, drink and observe. Here are some impressions...

POP-UP STORE TOYKIO X NRW FORUM

On January 27th the first ”Pop-Up Store TOYKIO X NRW Forum” will be opened! For one month the beautiful NRW forum in Düsseldorf will show designer vinyl toys and artworks with the focus on photography and street art.
The widely popular series of munnyworld is the main part of the toy assortment that can be bought, which is the sweet, white little vinyl doll that exists in a variety of shapes and sizes and is there to be drawn on, painted on or dressed. This toy has already become a cult object in the DIY-sector and has been refined by many well-known artists and designers.

On the opening day the NRW forum and 7 artists and designers, for example the street artists Flying Förtress and the designer Max Fiedler, will invite everyone to a free workshop, where life customizing will take place with some background music of DJ Rafik.

TOYKIO, by the way, is a concept which has been established in 2011 in the Japanese quarter of Düsseldorf: being a combination of store, gallery and cafe, this multicoloured Shop at the corner of Immermannstreet/Oststreet is a real eye-catcher and totally worth a visit.

So: shop til you drop!!! ;-)
